Naming Your Devices
When you have multiple check-in stations, iPads handed out to different team members, or devices placed at various locations around your event, it becomes essential to know which device did what.
The Device Naming feature lets you give each iPad, phone, or tablet a custom name β directly in the device settings. This name is then saved alongside every check-in, every button press, and every scan in the guest's timeline and in your reports.
What it does
Instead of seeing generic device identifiers like "iPad (3)" or "Unknown Device" in your reports, you will see clear, human-readable names like:
| Device name example | Location or purpose |
|---|---|
iPad 1 β Main Entrance | Front door check-in |
iPad 2 β VIP Lounge | VIP area check-in |
Reception 1 | Front desk |
Workshop 1 | Workshop session tracking |
Bar Scanner | Scan & Track at the bar |
When a guest is checked in, the device name is recorded in their timeline and appears in your report exports. This gives you complete visibility into where and when each action happened.
How it works
- Set up on each device individually. The device name is configured directly in the Check-in App settings on each iPad, phone, or tablet.
- Does NOT sync across devices. This is intentional. Each device can have its own unique name. Device 1 does not need to know what Device 2 is called.
- Independent from all other settings. Naming your device does not affect guest lists, check-in buttons, or any other configuration.
How to name your device
- Open the Check-in App on the device you want to name.
- Go to Settings (the icon in the lower left).
- Look for Device and the pop up Set Device Name.
- Enter a clear, descriptive name (e.g., "Reception 1," "Workshop 1," "iPad β Coat Check").
- Save the setting.
That's it. From now on, every check-in performed on this device will include the device name in the guest timeline and in your reports.
Why this feature is powerful
Works incredibly well with multiple check-in buttons
When you combine device naming with multiple check-in buttons, your reports become incredibly detailed. You can see not only which button was pressed (e.g., "Day 2") but also which device pressed it (e.g., "iPad β North Entrance").
Perfect for Scan & Track
Use device naming with Scan & Track mode to know exactly where each scan happened. For example:
| Device name | Location | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Session A Scanner | Main Hall | Tracking attendance at keynote |
Session B Scanner | Workshop Room 1 | Tracking attendance at breakout |
Bar Scanner | Outdoor Bar | Counting drink redemptions |
Track iPads handed out to different helpers
Without creating a unique login for every team member, you can simply name each iPad after the person, role, or location. For example:
| Device name | Helper |
|---|---|
Sarah's iPad | Sarah (event coordinator) |
Check-in East | Door team east entrance |
Runner 1 | Volunteer with roving scanner |
If an issue arises, your reports will tell you exactly which device was used - no need to track who logged in where.
What gets recorded with the device name
| Action | Device name recorded? |
|---|---|
Guest check-in | β Yes |
Multiple check-in button press (e.g., Day 2) | β Yes |
Scan & Track timestamp | β Yes |
Example: Device naming in action
Scenario: A three-day conference with two entrances and a VIP lounge.
| Device name | Location | Actions performed |
|---|---|---|
Main Entrance Left | North door | Day 1 check-ins |
Main Entrance Right | South door | Day 1 check-ins |
VIP Lounge iPad | VIP area | Day 1, 2, 3 check-ins |
Session Tracker | Breakout room | Scan & Track for workshop attendance |
Your report shows: Which entrance each guest used, who checked into the VIP lounge, and who attended the workshop - all clearly labeled with device names.
Important notes
- Device names do not sync. If you have 10 iPads, you need to name each one individually.
- This is a feature, not a limitation. Independent naming gives you the flexibility to use descriptive names that make sense for each specific location or role.
- Device names appear in reports and timelines exactly as you type them, so be consistent with your naming convention (e.g., always use "iPad β Location" format).
- Important: If you move iPads or reuse them for different purposes and use this features, make sure you then also rename the device.
Pro tips
- Name your devices before the event or specific session starts. This ensures all check-in data is labeled correctly from the very first guest.
- Use a consistent naming convention. For example:
[Device Type] β [Location] β [Role]β "iPad β Main Entrance β Check-in" - For Scan & Track stations, name the device after the activity or location (e.g., "Photo Booth," "Coat Check," "Bar Counter").
- If you are handing out iPads to volunteers, name each device after the volunteer's name or their assigned post. This makes it easy to see who used which device in case of questions.
